Movie Trailer Review, Episode 3

Posted on Monday, November 13, 2006 in Josh Rants, Movie Trailer Reviews

We went out on Saturday night and saw Stranger Than Fiction, I think that movie deserves two Academy Awards for best picture.

Evan Almighty

The Trailer for Evan Almighty was about eighty percent trailer and twenty percent advertisment for a movie theater gift card bearing the Evan Almighty moniker. The trailer showed some funny moments about Evan (Steve Carell) building an ark. I can help but feel that this movie is just trying to ride the coattails of Steve Carell. I might see it, but not on my own free will.

Dreamgirls

Imagine the movie Ray except about the Supremes and Jamie Fox plays a woman. I’m joking about him playing a woman, but he is in this movie that is a remake of a musical about a trio of black women singers like the Supremes. The trailer was fun and for some reason Eddie Murphy is in it. The trailer bored and confused me.

The Pursit of Happyness

Will Smith plays a down and out single father who quits his door to door sales job to persue a better life for him and his son. This movie was designed to make you cry and it probably will make you cry. The misspelling in the title is intentional and has something to do with the movie. This is the only movie out of these four that I’m likely to see.

We are Marshall

College students playing football and Matthew McConaughey acting all charming. Before the movie starts the college football team is killed in a plane crash and while the town is still recovering from the tragedy McConaughey has to rebuild a winning football team. Wow. There are great formulas and then there are great formulas. With all of the natural drama that comes with sports movies mixed with the drama of the town recovering from loosing the sports team, this is a sure fire winner. Since I hate sports movies almost as much as I hate epic war movies I am going to avoid this one like the plauge, but it will likely set box office records and maybe even get nomiated for an Academy Award.

Let’s all do the reinstalling windows dance!

Posted on Saturday, November 11, 2006 in Josh Rants

It’s been well over a year since the last time I reinstalled windows on my desktop. Late in 2005 I was playing around with UPnP networking in Windows for DC++ and I think I seriously screwed something up with Windows networking, I never get an upload speed more than 4k (GO FASTER! OMG! 4k AND I’M GOING TO THROW YOU OUT THE WINDOW! MY WIFI LAPTOP GETS 40k UPSTREAM! I’M GOING COMPLETELY MAD!), I get green lights on torrents, but for some reason I can’t get any ports to fully qualify as being “open”. Needless to say this isn’t adequate.

A few weeks back I downloaded the Windows Vista RC2 but I haven’t tried it out, so I think I am going to get that rolling on my desktop (the Gigantor), but I don’t want to go through the hassle of reinstalling everything. I remember seeing on Digg an application package that contained all of your favorite free applications in one easy install, so it would go through and install Firefox 2, and AVG Free, and Trillian, and iTunes, but now I can’t find that story and Google sure isn’t helping. If you know where I can find that please let me know.

The night I failed as a consumer

Posted on Friday, November 10, 2006 in Josh Rants

I am not the type of person that sees an advertisement and goes and buys the product. When I am on the internet I barely see ads unless they are particularly obtrusive or annoying (and then I make a mental not to never patronize those establishments/products). But last night I was driving home from work and I saw a billboard for Leinenkugel’s Apple Spice beer and I thought “that’s exactly what I want right now”. I had never heard of that variety before but for some reason it just sounded good. I ended up going to all three of the liquor stores by my house and none of them had the beer! As a consumer I felt very disappointed! I guess the beer is brand new and nobody hasn’t gotten it in yet, but that doesn’t stop Leinenkugel from advertising it. I ended up getting Heineken Dark Lager and I’m reasonably satisfied, but I would prefer an Apple Spice.

On the bright side, when I home I had a package waiting for me containing two Yomenga Raiders modified by Patrick Mitchell. I have several hundred hours of training in double A under my belt, but I still can’t do a single trick. Maybe these little beauties will be what I need to take my double A play to another level. You can’t hold me to this, but if I start getting any good I just might start competing again (jpop anyone?).

F-14s catapulting from carriers

Posted on Friday, November 10, 2006 in Josh Rants

I grew up as a Navy brat so I have been on aircraft carriers before but this is a really cool video of how the launching mechanism works on airplanes.

This small metal thing on the deck of the carrier grabs a metal pole that hangs down from the aircraft and basically slingshots it into the air. I’d be curious to know what kind of mechanism is working below the deck that can pull an F-14 from zero to airborn in under 400 feet.

The landing mechanism is equally cool, I’ll look around to see if I can find a video of that, and I’ll post it later.

Obligatory Apology

Posted on Thursday, November 9, 2006 in Josh Rants

Fo’ sorry about my lack of posting lately. On Saturday I felt a cold coming on, so I went to Dunn Bros and had two mocha’s and within an hour I felt like all kinds of sick. I’ve got another video in the making (it’s a good one) and Indy States is a GO! I haven’t confirmed this with anyone yet, but I think we’ll be leaving Thursday night (November 30) and driving to Oshkosh to pick up Abe and then straight on till Indianapolis. Friday night will be a BBQ. We’ll be leaving on Sunday to drive back, but I haven’t thought about those details yet.

Sometimes I feel like Samir in Office Space,

“How come no one in this country can pronounce my name right? It’s Na-gee-een-ah-jah. Nagaenajar”

It’s Schalicto, with an “A”, Scha-lic-to. But to eschew any further discrepancies with my handle I have purloined the domain schlicto.com. Now those luddites who go wrong with my name may still end up right. And that is the inevitable goal. If there is anything else I can do to assist you in reading my blog please let me know.

The name derived from a potential career move I once considered as “The Great Schalicto” magician and stage performer. It has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? And it’s more pleasant looking too, the “A” balances the aesthetics of the word nicely.
