Movie Trailer Review, Episode 20

Posted on Saturday, November 24, 2007 in Movie Trailer Reviews

We went to see No Country For Old Men last night.  The Coen’s prove once again that they are master film makers despite their last two inexcusable pieces of trash.  And I saw three new trailers!

The Bucket List

Unlike the Coen Brothers, Rob Reiner rarely makes a film that redeems himself and I think The Bucket List will be another Alex & Emma and not a When Harry Met Sally.  The film stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman as dying old men who set forth to accomplish goals before they die.  The trailer is full of uplifting music and Jack Nicholson mugging for the camera.  Mark my words, this was a terrible trailer and the movie will be just as bad.

Pride and Glory

New York cop movie with Ed Norton and Collin Farrell.  It looks like a wanna-be The Departed.  It is directed by Gavin O’Conner who has done nothing of interest.  The trailer literally sat the audience down and explained every single plot point until we were all dizzy and nauseous… I think some people were convulsing by the end of it.  I like Ed Norton as an actor but there is this scene in the trailer where he delivers a line “It cost me everything!” with such a wussy winy tone that it leads me to believe that overall direction on the film is weak and nobody is going to show up on opening weekend to see it.

There Will Be Blood

There is something about Daniel Day Lewis that is just magnetic.  The very start of this trailer had me riveted and then the words “Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson” showed on the screen and I was sold.  The film is about a cut-throat oil tycoon (Lewis) at the turn-of-the-century.  Paul Thomas Anderson is one of America’s great film auteurs (along with the Coens) and I think it will be great to see him make a western with Daniel Day Lewis.  The trailer for There Will Be Blood is bold, sharp and very gripping and I have all confidence that the film will be so as well.
