Movie Trailer Review, Episode 7

Posted on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 in Movie Trailer Reviews

I went and saw Night at the Museum with Lindsay and her sister, it was fun, it didn’t irritate me at all.

Shrek the Third

In the trailer we are led to believe that Shrek has a kid and maybe he has to spend some time as a human or something.  There is a funny screen where Pinocchio sufficiently obfuscates the truth without lying.  The trailer was cute and funny.  No real complaints here.

Oceans 13

I hated the remake of Oceans 11, kicked and screamed when I saw trailers for Oceans 12 and now I’ve just given up.  Whoopy doo.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

This trailer is still confusing me.  Did the 2005 Fantastic Four movie make money?  Did it make enough money to justify a sequel?  In the interest of full disclosure I’ll admit that I didn’t see the movie, but I avoided it with good reason.  Down to the trailer; it was alright.  We see Silver Surfer swoop in an crash a funeral that the Fantastic Four are attending so Johnny Storm lights up and chases him through the city.  I did enjoy the trailer, and I love the Silver Surfer but I don’t foresee myself seeing this movie and I do foresee this moving being another colossal failure for the Fantastic Four franchise.

Ratatouille

This is the next baby from Disney and Pixar and in the interest of full disclosure I LOVED THIS TRAILER!  In it we see a rat in a fancy French restaurant trying to steal some food.  Then the rat explains to us that he loves fine food and that just because he is a rat doesn’t mean that he should eat garbage.  And that’s the whole trailer.  Pixar does a great job of telling us about the movie, and giving us a feel for the comedy without showing us everything from the actual movie.

The Simpsons

Ooooh, I’m drooling a little bit about this one.  The trailer starts off with a cute CG bunny and a voice over tells us that lots of movies are cute and CG but that The Simpsons movie is ugly and 2D!  Then we see a hilarious set up of Homer and Bart on the roof of their house and Homer is trying to nail a shingle to the roof, we can clearly see this thumb over the head of the nail as he draws back the hammer to strike.  We sitting pondering what hilarity will ensue once Homer brings the hammer down on his thumb, but that doesn’t happen!  Before we can even finish imagining that potential comedy Homer lands the spiky rear of the hammer squarely in his eye, and then comedy ensues.  It’s a fantastic set up and an even better execution.  I rely on the Simpsons, even on their weaker episodes, to never disappoint.

Movie Trailer Review, Episode 6

Posted on Monday, December 18, 2006 in Movie Trailer Reviews

I just saw the movie Holiday and I freaking loved it, but more importantly I saw four new movie trailers.

Premonition

The dreams that Sandra Bullock has about her husbands death comes true, and then things get weirder as everyday when she wakes up it’s a different day in the timeline where she learns new clues about the mystery and she has to try and solve it before her husband actually dies.  The trailer is sloppy and it tries to play up a horror/suspense aspect of the film that probably really blows.  This trailer sucked hard and the movie is going to be twice as bad and much much longer.

Miss Potter

The trailer for Miss Potter was really a lot of fun.  It was kind of like Amelie meets Finding Neverland with a dash of Bridget Jones Diary.  It’s the story of Beatrix Potter, the author of “The Tale of Peter The Rabbit”, and her dating and over active imagination.  Renee Zellweger plays Beatrix and and Ewan McGregor plays her love interest.  The trailer is magical and Zellweger seems a little less obnoxious than her normal self.  My only real problem is that it seems a little bit too much like Finding Neverland 2.

Because I Said So

Because I Said So is the story of a mom and her daughters and their dating life.  Diane Keaton plays her typical “trying to be hip mom” character that she has been playing for the past 5 years.  Keatons character is trying to teach her grown-up children life lessons and make sure they meet the right men, meanwhile her grown-up children try and teach their mom life lessons and make sure she meets a great man.  The trailer was kind of dry and the movie looks a little trite.

Bridge to Terebithia

Walden Entertainment partnered with Disney to bring us the trainwreck that was The Chronicles of Narnia, in-fact they have delayed the production of Price Caspian to make Bridge to Terebithia and I think it was a good decision.  Unfortunately I don’t think that the Chronicles franchise is going to go much further based on the weak showing of the first movie.  The trailer for Bridge to Terebithia was enchanting and engaging, I am completely unfamiliar with the book for which this movie is based and I think that is why it seems so great.  The production value looks a lot higher than Chronicles too.

Movie Trailer Review, Episode 5

Posted on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 in Josh Rants, Movie Trailer Reviews

I just got rocked so hard watching Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. Amazingly I saw four brand new trailers.

Ghost Rider

This trailer tells the whole origin story of Ghost Riding and gives a lot away about the movie. We get to see Nick Cage as Ghost Rider with a big chain whip thing. I’m not interested in seeing Ghost Rider, but it was a fairly convincing trailer. My favorite part was at the very end when Ghost Rider drives off the roof of a building and then drives down the side of the building. Now that’s metal.

Norbit

For some reason people keep giving jobs to Eddie Murphy, and in turn Eddie Murphy keeps making terrible movies with him in multiple rolls. Norbit is a young and unconfident black man who has a large and confident black girlfriend (also played by Murphy). The trailer is pretty typical, but it had some funny moments and some gross-out moments. I’m not going to see the movie, but the trailer wasn’t half bad.

The Invisible

I dunno, some kid gets murdered but fights to come back to life by solving his own murder with the help of his still-living girlfriend. I’m not sure what they were aiming for when they made this trailer (or the whole movie for that matter) but they ended up with a steaming pile straight from the movie poopshoot. Seriously, who bankrolls these projects and do they actually expect them to make money? The trailer pretty much tells us the whole movie and then has some intense music and fast cut scenes.

Mr. Woodcock

What is this? School for Scoundrels II? Billy Bob Thornton plays Mr. Woodcock, the gym teacher at a high school who mentally scared the main character who grows up to be a self help guru. Then he finds out that his mom is dating Mr. Woodcock, can’t you just see the comedy? Thornton used to play likable characters but he seems to be stuck in a rut of playing jerks. However this was probably the best of these trailers, with Sean William Scott playing a normal (non-Stifler) roll and Susan Sarandon wholly out of her element. I might even go see this movie based entirely on the strength of this trailer.

Movie Trailer Review, Episode 4

Posted on Sunday, November 19, 2006 in Josh Rants, Movie Trailer Reviews

Went to see Casino Royale today and it didn’t fail to disappoint. My big complaint was that the trailers were proceeded by six commercials, ouch.

Evan Almighty

We are Marshall

Rocky Balboa

This trailer really got me pumped. I love the Rocky movies, especially the fifth one. This trailer gives me the impression of a thrilling conclusion to an epic franchise.

Spiderman 3

This was a bad trailer. bad. I am excited to see this movie, but it is not because of this trailer. They showed the entire freaking movie and managed to make it look really dull and uninteresting. booooo. I can’t wait for this to open.

The Good Shepard

Movie Trailer Review, Episode 3

Posted on Monday, November 13, 2006 in Josh Rants, Movie Trailer Reviews

We went out on Saturday night and saw Stranger Than Fiction, I think that movie deserves two Academy Awards for best picture.

Evan Almighty

The Trailer for Evan Almighty was about eighty percent trailer and twenty percent advertisment for a movie theater gift card bearing the Evan Almighty moniker. The trailer showed some funny moments about Evan (Steve Carell) building an ark. I can help but feel that this movie is just trying to ride the coattails of Steve Carell. I might see it, but not on my own free will.

Dreamgirls

Imagine the movie Ray except about the Supremes and Jamie Fox plays a woman. I’m joking about him playing a woman, but he is in this movie that is a remake of a musical about a trio of black women singers like the Supremes. The trailer was fun and for some reason Eddie Murphy is in it. The trailer bored and confused me.

The Pursit of Happyness

Will Smith plays a down and out single father who quits his door to door sales job to persue a better life for him and his son. This movie was designed to make you cry and it probably will make you cry. The misspelling in the title is intentional and has something to do with the movie. This is the only movie out of these four that I’m likely to see.

We are Marshall

College students playing football and Matthew McConaughey acting all charming. Before the movie starts the college football team is killed in a plane crash and while the town is still recovering from the tragedy McConaughey has to rebuild a winning football team. Wow. There are great formulas and then there are great formulas. With all of the natural drama that comes with sports movies mixed with the drama of the town recovering from loosing the sports team, this is a sure fire winner. Since I hate sports movies almost as much as I hate epic war movies I am going to avoid this one like the plauge, but it will likely set box office records and maybe even get nomiated for an Academy Award.

Movie Trailer Review, Episode 2

Posted on Thursday, November 9, 2006 in Josh Rants, Movie Trailer Reviews

I went and saw Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan yesterday. It was amazing, the theater was filled with old people who should not have been watching Borat (they probably thought they were there to vote). I was a couple minutes late but I did catch three trailers.

Tourista

A group of American tourists are vacationing in Brazil where they befriend a blast of beach going Brazilians. Then the Brazilians steal their kidneys and leave them in the middle of no where. The only hope the tourists have is a young boy they meet in a nearby village, but he screws them even worst than the last ones did. I kinda like the idea of the movie, it seems like a slasher kinda flick that is on the verge of straight genre. Lindsay things the movie looks terrible, but I’d probably see it.

The Fountain

We have been seeing trailers for The Fountain for a few months not. Honestly the trailers don’t excite me nearly as much as just the idea of seeing another film by Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requim for a Dream). The film is about the search for the fountain of youth and seems to feature a lot of beautiful imagery. I will see this film on opening day.

Night at the Museum

Another trailer we have seen a dozen times now. Ben Stiller plays a night security guard at a natural history museum where all of the exhibits come to life. This is a fun trailer and maybe a more likable character than we are used to seeing Ben Stiller play. I’ll see it if nothing else is showing the interests me.
